    The book is well-written and chronicles Gaston's life early as a child born in Alabama at a time when "lynching" of blacks in America was at its peak, and continues through into adulthood, focusing on his business ventures, marriages and family life, all the while including historical facts of black America during the 's. Thomas Sutton (–) founded a photographic company in Jersey in , together with Blanquart-Evrard. The company produced prints from calotype paper negatives, waxed to render the paper translucent. Sutton was editor of Photographic Notes, the fortnightly journal of the Birmingham Photographic Society (though published from Jersey) which he founded together with his partner.

Who We Are Birmingham Historical Society Celebrating Birmingham's Historythrough Research,Publishing, & Education Established inthe Birmingham Historical Society contributes to the quality of life in Birmingham by preserving, learning from, and celebrating its past while helping to shape its future.

It celebrates Birmingham history through research, publishing, and education. The first Birmingham Photographic Society was founded in October Membership was universally available to men and women. Members of the society contributed greatly to the advance in photographic knowledge and techniques and were responsible for many important advances in photographic processes.

To commemorate Alabama's bicentennial (), the genealogical and historical community partnered with the Alabama Bicentennial Commission and the Alabama Department of Archives and History to create a portal to publications documenting the story of the state's people and its past.

The Birmingham Historical Society (established in ) is a non-profit group committed to the preservation of and education about Birmingham's history. The organization is headquartered at Sloss Quarters, part of the Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark.
